Good As Gold - Best UK Conference Centre
Good As Gold - Best UK Conference Centre
The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) is as good as gold! The SECC, in-house caterers, Leith’s and The Convention Bureau of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB), were all winners at the 2008 Meetings and Incentive Travel magazine awards, being awarded ‘Best UK Conference Centre, ‘Best UK Food & Beverage Supplier’ and ‘Best UK Convention Bureau’ respectively.
The news of this exceptional achievement comes at a time when Glasgow is riding high on the success of winning the bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Recognising these accolades the Directors and Staff of the SECC hosted an evening
for local clients on Thursday 29th May – which also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the iconic Clyde Auditorium.
Over 180 friends and business associates gathered together for a glittering evening of champagne, an excellent supper and top entertainment.

A Night to Remember
John Sharkey, Group Chief Executive, SECC said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the SECC and Glasgow and it’s down to the hard work and commitment of all our staff and I would like to thank them for their efforts. Glasgow has struck gold in more ways than one and we are delighted to be a part of it!”
Ben Goedegebuure, Director of Sales at the SECC, said: “It’s official, the SECC and GCMB are the best in Britain and this award is all the more important because it is our clients who have voted for us and no one is better placed to measure service than them.”
Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of GCMB, said: “These awards voted for by 6,000 businesses demonstrate the impact on our customers of the strong coordinated approach taken by GCMB and the SECC in the drive to bring business tourism to Glasgow. The city is enjoying unprecedented success in the UK and international conference sales market”.
A highlight of the evening was a special performance in the auditorium from the legendary Eddie Reader who delighted guests with her renditions of well loved songs.
Speeches during the evening were well received by guests and delivered by the SEC Ltd Chairman, Ian Grant, Scott Taylor, Chief Executive, GCMB, Councillor Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council and newly appointed SEC Ltd Group Chief
